About the Topic

The California Academy of Sciences in Golden Gate Park and its staff has been exploring, explaining, and protecting the natural world since 1853. Its group of exhibits cover the land and the oceans, the plants and animals that inhabit them, and the universe beyond our planet. Areas of staff research include anthropology, biodiversity, botany, geology, ichthyology, invertebrate zoology, orthinology, and mammalogy. A new Academy building has just opened, better to display and explain the natural world to its visitors and also demonstrating the ability to minimize the environmental impact of such a major installation. Major exhibits areas are an Aquarium, a Planetarium, a Natural History Museum, an inside Rainforest, and a Living Roof. The Building received a platinum rating for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) for its use of recycleable water, reclaimed structural and insulating materials, natural lighting and solar power, and living roof of natural plants and wildlife habitat. The Mission, Opportunities for Visitors and Education, and the Novel Design and how that concept correlates with its scientific and educational purposes will be discussed.
